A Moment In Time
Self Assessment
Paragraph 1: Write a description of the project itself
(Refer to your project description but paraphrase in your own words)
As a class we sat down and talked about our new project, Moment in Time. With this project we had to learn different skills such as specificity, setting, style and grammar. Using these skills we then had to come up with a moment that was special to us in a way this moment could be as long as you wanted or as short as you wanted but to do the project this moment had to be written out on a one page paper, single spaced, 12-point font. After creating my first draft, I decided to share it with the class. After sharing drafts of the project with the class, we created two more drafts. The final included one page, single spaced, 12 times roman font.
Paragraph 2: Take-aways and Enduring Understandings
In this paragraph, discuss your actual academic learning in this project. What are the ingredients for a strong story, why do we tell stories, how does writing about your own experience transform it, and how do you think narrative writing can help you grow as a writer in general?
At the start of this project, I felt as if I was an average creative writer. This in fact changed during the project. I changed in a way that caused me to go deeper emotionally and provide more specific details. It became easier for me to write about my experiences. One way I did this was by introducing a struggle that I was having. People can relate to struggles. For me, learning one of the key values of writing has helped me grasp the true understanding of causing a reader to feel what the character is feeling in a story.
Paragraph 3: The Writing
What stood out, what was difficult, what would you have liked to have changed about the way you wrote your story?
What stood out in my story were the specific details. An example of this is at the beginning of the story where I set the theme using very specific details as if the reader were there standing where I stood looking around. The most difficult part of the project was my first draft. I had only written half a page with double spacing. It soon occurred to me that it was supposed to be single spacing. As I cranked out the drafts it became easier to write all the details, because I was remembering my experiences. One thing I would have changed in my writing was the amount of nonsense words I used in the writing. I tend to put words in my writing that are not necessary.
Paragraph 4: Personal Growth
What was the most important personal or social lesson you learned or in what way(s) did you grow through this project as a person?
The personal lesson I learned was how important it is to be a good writer. Becoming a good writer will help me create good stories. express myself, and become a more knowledgeable person. Through this project, I realized it’s important to get things off my mind and down on paper. For example, until writing this story, I didn’t realize I had a fear of the ocean. As I continued writing the story, I realized I had become more confident in the water because of my swimming skills and the wildlife around me. Having more confidence caused me to really appreciate and enjoy the ocean. Without writing this story, I may not have realized my personal growth while at the camp. Going forward, I will have pride with each story I write. I know now that if I wasn’t good writer, then I would have a difficult time expressing myself and helping people understand what I am trying to say.
